Running and Eating Disorders
Runners are not immune to eating disorders. They have some of the highest rates, partly due to outdated coaching methods dictating lower weight equals a faster time. There is also a higher risk of eating disorders in this population due to pressure throughout the running community to “look like a runner”
What Flutters of Hope aims to do is not only raise awareness for eating disorders but also to show those who are struggling that there is hope and there are runners of all levels in many different bodies. The fastest version of you is not the smallest, but the version that is well-fueled!
Flutters of Hope intends to increase its reach in the running community with a race with multiple participation options so runners of all levels can participate. The event is a series of three races, all run at the same time: 1 hour, 3 hours, and 6 hours all on a 2-mile loop, with only 91 feet of elevation each lap. There is also an option to compete as a team.
